Just Mercy Book Discussion
A number of our church’s youth read the adapted for young adult version of the New York Times bestseller Just Mercy: A Story of Justice and Redemption by Bryan Stevenson. Stevenson is an attorney who founded the Equal Justice Initiative, a legal practice dedicated to defending the poor, the wrongly accused, and those trapped in our criminal justice system. It was the winner of the Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Nonfiction.  Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, Desmond Tutu, wrote, “Bryan Stevenson is America’s young Nelson Mandela, a brilliant lawyer fighting with courage and conviction to guarantee justice for all.”  A major motion picture was made based on the book.

As I watched the coverage of George Floyd’s death and the riots that followed, I felt compelled to do something. I decided, at the very least, I can educate myself about our criminal justice system.  Following the lead of our youth, I’m going to read Just Mercy.  I invite you to read it also. It can be found easily at bookstores and online. I will hold a book discussion on Zoom on Thursday, June 25 @ 7:30pm for anyone who is interested in joining.
