If you have the opportunity to view the night sky in its expansive majesty, it is difficult not to be overwhelmed by the grandeur of creation and the awesome nature of God. In fact, if you are able to see the banding milky clusters of countless stars stretching out into infinite space, you realize that your finite mind cannot grasp the expansive presence of God, and all that God has made. Creation is both wonderful and terrifying, intimate and infinite, awe-inspiring and mind-boggling.
It cannot be all that surprising that less advanced societies are often the ones who are most reverential to the divine mysteries of life—their light has not crowded out God’s light. For the rest of us, streetlights, traffic lights, city lights pollute the evening sky. We cannot see beyond our existence. We are blind to the magnificence of God.
When was the last time you caught a glimpse of the awesome and expansive nature of God?
Lord, I often get so caught up in my own business and busyness, that I miss out on the astounding beauty and mind-bending extravagance of Your creation of which I am but a small part. Perhaps, I don’t want to see it. If I avert my eyes, I can pretend to be God for a day. I can ignore your presence and shirk the call to reverence. But I know that is no way to live—divorced from myself and from You. Break into my life with a vision of Your grandeur that I cannot dismiss. Help me to grow more comfortable with the fact there are things in heaven and on earth that I will never be able to understand or explain. In Jesus’ name, I pray. AMEN.
