I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Choose life… Deuteronomy 30:19

God sets clear boundaries for us. God outlines behavioral territory that is safe for us, and God also defines for us places of danger. There are blessings and curses to be had in life, and we have been given the freedom to choose a path that can lead in either direction. God has given us rules to live by, intended for our benefit and blessing. When we choose to disobey, we often find our lives accursed . . . that is the cost of freedom. God has set life and death, blessings and curses before us. God is not dispassionate, however; God desires that we choose the way toward life and blessing.

Do you exercise the freedom that God has given you in life-giving ways, or do your choices bring curses to bear on your life?

Lord, You have mapped out life for us, and like a loving parent You have made strong recommendations about how we should live in order to live well. But we often make different choices that deviate from Your will for us . . . and we suffer for it. Help me to make good choices today so that I can enjoy Your blessings tomorrow. In Jesus’ name, I pray. AMEN.
